Terms Of Service
This page covers the terms of service for all of EtternaOnline’s services. By using the site, you agree to the terms provided upon registration and on this page. Please note that these rules and guidelines may change at any time without prior notice.
When creating an account on https://etternaonline.com, you gain access to use the website, the community forums, and the knowledge wiki. However, these terms are not limited to only the aforementioned services and may also apply to other services that EtternaOnline uses now or in the future.
EtternaOnline is a free service. Expect server maintenance or downtime happening at any given time with little to no warning. Do not treat EtternaOnline as your sole score backup service.
What is Etterna?
Etterna is a rhythm game based on the StepMania engine that is focused on better accomodating the four-key keyboard metagame. Some new features include automatic difficulty calculation, a new scoring system, and engine optimizations.
StepMania is software that was originally created in 2001 to serve as a Dance Dance Revolution simulator, during its many years of development the software grew to support even more game modes such as Pump It Up and Beatmania. The single most common game type is the original DDR style (4 keys). This game mode can be played on a Dance Pad or keyboard (or anything you can map 4 keys to, such as a Guitar Hero controller or a Gamepad). Over the years, the keyboard community for the game has grown extensively and broken barriers in relation to what Charts are possible to clear; Etterna is a community developed version of StepMania 5 specifically made with keyboard players in mind.
What is EtternaOnline?
EtternaOnline is the online companion for the game Etterna. It is an online score tracking system that allows players to track their progress and scores achieved in the game, and compete against each other in online chart leaderboards & global leaderboards. EtternaOnline also serves as the main community hub for Etterna players, where players can hang out and connect over shared interests.
Leaderboard Rules
EtternaOnline leaderboards are primarily focused on keyboard play, specifically the Spread style, with the requirement that only one finger is used per key. We expect that all scores submitted to the leaderboards adhere to this style. However, scores achieved using other playstyles, such as Index, One Hand, or even a Dance Pad, are also acceptable, as long as only one finger is used per key.
You cannot submit scores to EtternaOnline that are achieved using playstyles where two or more fingers per key are used to gain an advantage on files that would be more difficult or impossible to achieve with the traditional one-finger-per-key Spread style. This means you cannot use double bindings, one hand trill a column, or two hand trill a column.
For uneven keycount modes, the center column is free to be double bound. For keymodes with a “scratch” key, the leftmost OR rightmost columns are free to be double bound. Playstyles such as Index will not be invalidated for playing Index, but scores utilizing the index playstyle which also offer Jacks as the prominent skillset may be invalidated.
Scores submitted to EtternaOnline may be invalidated by a moderator for various reasons, including but not limited to:
-
Double Setup (DS) - Your score uses some input binding or technique which does not guarantee that each column maps to only one finger and the columns are equally separated across your hands and fingers in the exact same left to right order, with no alternation.
-
Score details that do not match with the feasibility of a score - Measures are in place to prevent this, and uploading a score that does not make sense, such as having a score over 100% or nonsensical judgment counts would be considered a bug.
-
Scores that were set on files that were temporarily disabled for ranking due to leaderboard related issues - In these cases, the scores will still be shown as valid, but you will not receive rating from them.
Account Rules
You are responsible for all actions taken on your account. Your account may be subject to suspension if it is used unfaithfully, with or without prior notice. You may not use your account for any of the following reasons:
-
Multiaccounting - Creation of multiple accounts owned or operated by you for any purpose.
-
Abusing Double Setup or other forbidden techniques on the leaderboards - You may be warned first depending on how egregious the repeated abuse is.
-
Harrassment of members of the community on any platform or medium - We aren’t going to track you, but if it’s reported to us then it becomes our problem.
-
Uploading particularly offensive content within your profile or in other uploaded materials - This is at the discretion of moderators, who may warn you depending on the severity.
-
Circumvention of name filters or any future filter for offensive content.
-
Cheating in any form - time warp, fake scores, modified scores, bug abuse, bot plays, etc.
-
Sharing your account details with somebody else for any purpose.
-
Impersonation of staff members and/or members of the community (Impersonation of the latter is handled on a case by case basis, depending on the motive).
-
Intentional abuse of the site or associated services in such a way to cause detriment to other users of the service, such as Denial of Service attacks or pointless usage of the report button.
-
Score sharing and distribution - Sharing your own scores or replays, or uploading the scores or replays of another user on your own account.
Pack Rules
Packs that are featured on the website are eligible to display online leaderboards and synchronize scores with online profiles.
We reserve the right to deny or remove packs from ranking for any reason that may or may not be covered in the guidelines. Users who repeatedly violate the pack guidelines or attempt to comply with them maliciously may have their request privileges revoked.
Name Changing
If you have created an account already and wish to change your name, this can be done via a request to a site admin. You must very clearly justify why the name change needs to be done. This is usually only done to assist a member in changing identity for a personal reason, not for fun.
Suspensions
If you are banned, the ban is permanent unless otherwise specified. You may appeal by directly messaging a site moderator on any platform. If the nature of your appeal is in bad faith, you will be denied with no future possible appeal. A regularly denied appeal may be reattempted after reasonable amount of time passage (a few months, give or take).
Reporting
Please report someone or something on the site if necessary. Moderators and admins can be contacted directly via the forum or Discord.
