New to 6k, any general tips?

I’ve been playing 4k for some time and was interested in learning 6k as well. Do you guys have any general tips like specific key bindings or maybe even beginner chart recommendations?

I tried using Q-W-E and I-O-P for a few days but my ring finger on the right hand feels stiff along with underside of my right wrist, even though before I would use my middle and ring finger for 4k

For 4k , I now use index and middle finger with A-S and J-K and I do play wrist up.

For beginner charts, I’d recommend a couple of the older solo beginner packs on the site (i.e Xiao’s Solo Beginner Pack and Patshu Solo Beginner Pack). Lots of the songs have several difficulties and should allow you to get your bearings.

Patterns in 6k will naturally require more effort for you to execute, so you may be feeling that now, combined with general inexperience. Your 4k abilities will not transfer to 6k outside of the center four columns, which is not the same thing as being able to read or play 6k patterning, aside from the outer columns. You’ll be building muscle memory and nearly starting over, as you likely did with 4k. You’ll also notice that it’s substantially harder to go fast as the keys increase; pattern complexity and reading are a lot more prevalent, as opposed to speed.

Yeah, especially the chordjack patterns are incredibly tricky at first and I just freeze for a few seconds. Rolls and streams are obviously easier. Just gotta get used to the new finger movements.

I’d like to expand on recommendations for beginner packs, so here is my list:

  • Xiao’s Solo Beginner Pack (I-III)
  • Patashu Solo Beginner Pack (1-2)
  • Vox Box
  • Tentative Anime Pack
  • iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls SOLO Project (I-III)
  • Solo Rulz Pack 2
  • Solo Rulz Pack 4
  • Solord State Squad
  • BCMP 6

You’ll need to play as if you’re starting a new rhythm game; doesn’t matter what your 4k skill is. That’s why I picked up 6k, to re-live that learning process I had for 4k! Turns out, it was very fun, and still is fun to this day.

Agreed on what Foxfire said, there’s a stronger emphasis on pattern execution for 6k, as opposed to 4k.
