In the beginning, Mina created Etterna. The game was formless and empty, with no arrows, no charts, and no players. Darkness was upon the face of the screen, and the void was filled with osu. And Mina said, “Let there be arrows,” and there were arrows.
Mina saw that the arrows were good, and Mina separated the arrows from the osu. Mina called the arrows “patterns,” and the osu was left in the dark, unworthy. And there was a quad and a miss — the first session.
Mina said, “Let there be a division between the patterns, separating the etterna from the osu,” and so it was. Mina created streams, jacks, tech, and handstreams, each with their own difficulty, and it was good. Mina called the easier patterns “osu,” and the harder ones were named “jachnical.” There was a quad and a miss — the second session.
Mina said, “Let the patterns rise with more complexity, each according to their speed and density,” and it happened. The charts of Etterna brought forth streams of arrows, bursts of jacks, and waves of trills, each arrow coming perfectly in time. Mina saw this, and it was good.
Mina then said, “Let the players appear, skilled enough to hit these arrows, each following the notes,” and Etterna filled with players of all levels. Some could barely pass the easy songs, while others conquered the impossible patterns, becoming D8. And Mina saw this too, and it was good. There was a quad and a miss — the third session.
Mina said, “Let there be mods and customizations in the game to help improve the players’ skills.” Mina created rate mods, mirror, note skins, and more, giving the players control to train and master every chart. Mina saw that it was good.
But then, osu, lurking in the shadows, attempted to lure the players away with its flashy colors and oversimplified patterns. Mina saw this and said, “The osu shall have no power here.” And thus, Etterna stood as the true rhythm game, complex, fast, and rewarding. Those who stayed in the darkness of osu would forever miss the deeper challenge of Etterna.
And on the final day, Mina retarded, as the arrows flowed perfectly on the screen, and the players hit them all with precision, knowing that Etterna was a game like no other.
Thus, Etterna and its players were complete, and Mina saw everything that had been made, and behold, it was very good.
