Etterna Community Ranked Guideline (Basic)

Recently, there’s been an increase in people creating new packs and converting from Osumania to Etterna, so I wrote this article to explain the minimum standards.

I’m not an administrator, so this is just my opinion, but I hope it will make pack checking a little easier for administrators and be helpful for those trying to create new packs.

1: Basic Rules

I’ll list four points.

• Adjust the offset using waveform editing software (details explained in section 2).

• Do not use sexually explicit images (CDtitles, background, banner, etc).
  
  A huge reason why it’s not a good idea to put straight up explicit images in your pack is because there are minors that play Etterna, and Etterna is a game that isn’t JUST for adults.
  By putting porn in your pack, you are technically giving children direct access to that content.

• No osu snap.
  
  converted from osu to etterna, sometimes things will mess up and notes will be moved to a different snap, in which you need to just push them over to the right snap.
  For now, please place it properly in the “red note”!!!

• No osuintro (not mandatory).
  
  On osu, there is the ability to skip long empty intros. This feature does not exist on Etterna, so when converting your own files, please chart the empty space, or cut the audio and fix the sync so that the chart starts immediately.

2: How to Adjust the Offset

Either is fine.

※The steps to adjust the offset using Arrow Vortex are as follows

・“File”、“Open”、“sm file select” click in order

・“View”、”Time based(C-mod)”、“Wavefrom” click in order

・“Wave color & Filter color (Both can be any color)”
“filter type” (Filter color: Low-pass becomes larger, High-pass becomes smaller)
“strength” (The further to the right you move it, the smaller the filter color becomes.)
“overlay filtered wavefrom” (check)
Once you’ve set it up, click “Apply filter”

Any filter color & setting is fine as long as it’s easy to see.

・“Tempo”、“Adjust sync” click in order

・Touch “Music offset” to match the filter color to the guideline.
Before that, please use “CTRL + mouse wheel up/down” to zoom in and out on the waveform.

Once synchronized, click “File” and then “Save” to save the file.

Bonus (Basic Note Operations)
These operations are useful when fix snap.
“CTRL+A” selects the entire score.
“CTRL+X” cuts (“CTRL+C” copies).
“CTRL+V” pastes the cut note at the start point shown in the image.

Pressing “CTRL+A” makes the note glow white.
The paste point is from the judgment arrow.

3: How to Convert from Osumania to Etterna

Unzip the osz file and check the contents of the map folder.
Delete the 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc speed osu files (because Etterna allows you to play any file at any speed).

Launch it and drag and drop the folder into omtosmconverter.

Converted for Etterna.

The offset will not be correct, so adjust it with Arrow Voltex

Second Bonus (osu conversion sample pack)
For this pack, I converted my favorite songs that I listen to every day on Osu Mania.
The offsets are roughly synchronized…maybe
Of course, please do not rank this hobby pack. If you find a map you like and want to include it in a pack you are working on, it is important to get permission from the map creator.

Here are some notes.

• ArrowVortex has an auto-sync feature, which is very helpful for songs with static bpm. Non-static bpm songs are a little harder to sync though.
• A huge reason why it’s not a good idea to put straight up explicit images in your pack is because there are minors that play Etterna, and Etterna is a game that isn’t JUST for adults. By putting porn in your pack, you are technically giving children direct access to that content. This is why I have stopped using technically explicit or very suggestive GFX. Sure explicit music is a different thing, and I would say probably put a warning in your pack forum posts about that kind of content (which I plan on doing personally for future pack releases).
• Your download link to ArrowVortex is of the outdated 2017 build. For the most up-to-date build, here’s a link to that: https://github.com/uvcat7/ArrowVortex
• And finally, some advice. If you come from Osu and you want to make charts and release them on ArrowVortex, I highly recommend you take the time to learn the ArrowVortex editor and make your charts in there.

I have a question.
Do those rules apply to old files that are already Ranked? (Sexually tough background etc.)

Stuff that is legacy, ie, ranked before the rules for ranking came into practice, remains ranked. Stuff that is historic, such as the nuclear blast packs, are protected entirely.

New ranking requests must follow the rules, though.

after reading this i was about to write a half paragraph freaking out about how i had no clue arrowvortex was actively maintained and that i have been using the 2017 version this entire time, but then i checked the website and saw it was open sourced this year, i almost died in real life i swear. also yay arrowvortex is FOSS now

I wanted to add an important note in regards to ranking stuff:
This subject is usually iffy, and since this is a post about guidelines, I thought I would drop this here. It’s generally about charting music with offensive language.

• Something that may or may not cause your packs to be unranked is music with offensive language. For example, slurs. Slurs in songs are reviewed case by case. The main guideline is simple: don’t be a jerk. If a slur is part of the original track (like in some rap songs, and older music overall), that’s usually fine. If it’s added, emphasized, or used in a way that feels like bad faith, rankers may unrank or reject the pack completely. If you’re unsure whether it’s okay or not, it’s usually better to avoid charting songs with slurs all together.
  I have checked with rankers about this, and that’s the general consensus.
